Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

If Amr is looking to buy a car and he is not experienced.

He has a very close friend Zaid who knows about cars a lot. Amr asked Zaid to help him find a car.

Zaid finds a car but quotes a price keeping some commission. For example the original price was 500k Zaid says the you can get the car for 600k. Amr doesn’t know that Zaid is keeping profit. Then Amr gets to know of it. According to Zaid the profit is his right whereas Amr thinks he broke his trust as he contacted him being a friend not a broken and quoted wrong price. Please tell whether the munafa Zaid is making is jaiz or not? The munafa is random and Zaid did is professionally not a broker.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Amr requested Zaid to merely assist him in finding a car. Amr did not enter into any contract with Zaid. If Zaid assisted Amr in finding a car, that will be regarded as a favour (ihsaan) from him. Zaid is not entitled to any commission from Amr. Therefore, if the car was 500k and Zaid quoted 600k, he is guilty of lies. If Zaid kept the extra 100k, he has to return it to Amr.[1]
