Purchasing grave plots

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

My question is regarding the purchase of grave plots. My father recently passed away and is buried in a cemetary near our local masjid. There is currently 1 plot available for purchase immediately adjacent to my father’s plot. I would like to know if it would be okay to purchase that plot with the intention that anyone in our family who passes away in our city can use that plot.

The intention is not for me or anyone specific, just incase anyone in my family passes away in this city in the future, if we all are not able to use the plot we can sell it back to the cemetary as well.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

It is permissible to purchase the plot for a grave.[1]
