How soon should a person perform a fardh ghusl?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

After Ihtilaam or relations with one’s wife, does one have to perform Ghusl as soon as possible or does one have to wait a while? I have heard that I have to wait until I have to urinate. Please clarify.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

It is not mandatory to perform the compulsory bath as soon as possible[1] or to wait until one urinates[2]. It is, however, recommended to perform a bath immediately or, at least, wash the private parts. Furthermore, it is a major wrong to delay the compulsory bath so much so that the prayer time expires[3].
