Doubtful foods

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

In regards to mushbooh food items, if we have bought them, what should be done? Should we throw them away or use them once or give them to someone since it is not clear whether they are halal or haram. Jazakumullah khayr.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

One should exercise precaution before purchasing an item.[1] Ensure that the item is halal and pure. If one purchased a doubtful item, try to ascertain whether it is halal or haram from reliable ulama.[2] Until then, do not use the item. If one is unable to ascertain whether it is halal or haram, he should discard it.[3] The Prophet, sallallahu alay hi wa sallam, said:

“دع ما يريبك إلى ما لا يريبك”

“Leave what is doubtful and take what is not doubtful”[4]
