Does the devil grant fame? What is the point of a hijab? Why is music bad? Why do Muslims not eat meat?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

Do you believe that the devil grants you fame in return for his worship and eternal hell?

What is the point of a hijab?

Why is music bad?

Why do you not eat meat?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

1)     As Muslims, we worship only Allah. Our fundamental purpose in this life is to submit to the rules and commands of Allah, our Creator, The All Wise. We believe that everything in this world happens by His command. He grants honour to whom He pleases and disgraces whom He wishes.

There are various sects all over the world today who worship the devil. They engage in all sorts of vile activities such as blood drinking, human sacrifices and carnal depravity. Allah (The Most High) has warned us of such in the Holy Quran,

“Shaitan (Satan) threatens you with poverty and orders you to immorality (evil deeds, illegal sexual intercourse, sins etc.); whereas Allah promises you Forgiveness from Himself and Bounty, and Allah is All-Sufficient for His creatures’ needs, All-Knower.”(2:268)

Allah further tells us of the failure of those who pursue the devil’s delusions, seeking wealth and fame;

“He (Satan) makes promises them, and arouses in them false hopes(desires of wealth and fame and long life); and Shaitan’s (Satan) promises are nothing but deceptions. The dwelling of such (people) is Hell, and they will find no way of escape from it.”(4:120,121)

Thus, as Muslims we believe that true honour and fame is only in the hands of Allah. If worldly fame is achieved through the devil and immoral acts, it would only lead to one’s ultimate destruction and can never called true honour and respect.

2)     Your second query is “What is the point of Hijab?”.

It is important to understand several points related to Hijab and modesty. If one were to peruse historical books of various times and ages, one would find modest covering of women in almost every society. Furthermore modesty is an integral component in all heavenly religions;  Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. It was not Islam that invented modesty or hijab. This existed in the laws of religions revealed before Islam, and remnants of this order can still be found in the altered books of those faiths. Mary, mother of Jesus (Peace be upon Him), is always depicted with a head-covering. One can still find both Jewish and Christian women today who cover in much the same way as Muslim women.

The concept of Hijab and modesty in Islam greatly emphasises on the dignity of women and her respectability, purity, and honour. She is not changed into an ill-used commodity for man in society and exploited, as observed in many European and Western countries which claim to be the champions of freedom and equality.  Consider these statistics which reflect on the outcome of such immoral societies.

  • 1 out of every 6 American women has been the victim of an attempted or completed rape in her lifetime (14.8% completed rape; 2.8% attempted rape).
  • Every 2 minutes, another American is sexually assaulted. There is an average of 237,868 victims (age 12 or older) of sexual assault each year.
  • 15% of sexual assault and rape victims are under age 12.
  • 60% of sexual assaults are not reported to the police.

97% of rapists will never spend a day in jail.

  • Approximately 2/3 of assaults are committed by someone known to the victim.[1]

3)     You inquire why music is bad?

As stated above, Allah is AlHakeem (The All Wise). Every order of Allah is filled with wisdom. Some of which we comprehend and most of which we cannot due to our limited intellect as humans.

In principle, nothing has been prohibited by Allah except that which is harmful to mankind.

Experiments have confirmed that the music of today is such that it does not only affect the brain, but each and every organ of one`s body. It is also proved that music affect`s one`s emotions, increases arousal in terms of alertness and excitement and also leads to various physiological changes in the person. In a psychology experiment, it was found that listening to moderate type of music increased one`s normal heart beat, whilst listening to rock music the heart beat increased even further, yet people claim that music has no effect.[2]

The messages of today`s music follow a general theme of fornication, drugs and other immoralities.

Islam does not only prohibit adultery and immoralities, but also those things that may lead to them. Music is a cause for arousing illicit desires of an individual. It leads a person to immoral acts. Therefore, Islam takes the preventive measure rather than suffer the consequences.

4)     We do eat meat. However, we eat meat of only those animal that are slaughtered according to the law of Allah, which is taking the name of Allah and severing at least three out of the four veins of the animal. Allah commands us to only eat that which is pure[3]. Hence, pigs, carrion, carnivores etc. are unlawful.

Meat is a great bounty of Allah. There are many vitamins and nutrients found only in meat, such as Vitamin B12, Creatine, Carnosine, Vitamin D3.[4] We thank Allah, Our Sustainer, for giving us the bounty of meat by taking His name before slaughtering the animal.

[3] Those who follow the Messenger, the Prophet who can neither read nor write (i.e.Muhammad SAW) whom they find written with them in the Taurat (Torah) (Deut, xviii, 15) and the Injeel (Gospel) (John xiv, 16), – he commands them for Al-Ma’ruf (i.e. Islamic Monotheism and all that Islam has ordained); and forbids them from Al-Munkar (i.e. disbelief, polytheism of all kinds, and all that Islam has forbidden); he allows them as lawful At-Taiyibat [(i.e. all good and lawful) as regards things, deeds, beliefs, persons, foods, etc.], and prohibits them as unlawful Al-Khaba’ith (i.e. all evil and unlawful as regards things, deeds, beliefs, persons, foods, etc.), he releases them from their heavy burdens (of Allah’s Covenant), and from the fetters (bindings) that were upon them. So those who believe in him (Muhammad SAW), honour him, help him, and follow the light (the Quran) which has been sent down with him, it is they who will be successful.(The Holy Quran 7:157)
