Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

At the outset, we would like to point out that watching television itself is impermissible as it is associated with many sins and evils.[1]

Shariah prohibits us from associating ourselves in any way whatsoever with anything that is prohibited in Shariah. Consider the following verse:

وإذا رأيت الذين يخوضون في آياتنا فأعرض عنهم حتى يخوضوا في حديث غيره وإما ينسينك الشيطان فلا تقعد بعد الذكرى مع القوم الظالمين

Translation: When you see those who engross themselves with Our Aayaat, then turn away from them until they engage in some other talk. Should Shaytaan cause you to forget, then after recalling, do not sit with the unjust people. [Al-An’aam. 68]

Under the commentary of this verse, it is mentioned that Shariah prohibits Muslims to be a part of any gatherings frequented by those who follow falsehood and by those whose statements are against Allah and His Rasul (Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam). Attending such gatherings is not only harmful but a sin as well. Furthermore, it is also mentioned in the books of tafseer that if one unmindfully attends such gatherings then one should immediately leave that gathering. [2]

Not only should you discard viewing such contents but abstain from watching television as well. The resentment that a person may have of the unislamic content may diminish gradually as a consequence of viewing these programmes. As Muslims, we are sensitive to our faith (‘aqeedah) and values. We do not compromise on our ‘aqeedah and do not show complacency to anything that may harm our ‘aqeedah.

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
