Can I sell insurance? Is car insurance permissible?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

I am currently working for Carphone Warehouse And as a part of my job i have to sell insurance with the mobile phones i sell. Is it permissible or not. Also could you please clarify regarding car insurance as its a law to have car insurance otherwise you could get a criminal record.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

1)     We have discussed the issue of selling phone insurance with representatives of a phone company here in South Africa and there are a few issues of consideration in the contract. We have received your question at a time when we are about to go on break, hence it is not possible for us to facilitate an answer at present. We advise that you re-submit your question in mid-January through admin@daruliftaa.net. We would appreciate if you could provide a copy of the insurance policy that you sell or at least, information on what the policy covers and its conditions.

2)     Third party car insurance is mandatory according to legal law. Therefore, there is a leeway for taking out such policies.

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
