Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

I wanted to ask you a question in regards to a story which I have heard being related and even read in the tafseer of Surah Al-Insaan (Ad-Dahr).  The story is in regards to when Hasan (raa) and Hussein (raa) had fallen ill and Ali (raa) had made an oath of fasting three days if Allah cured them.  I’m pretty sure you know the rest of the narration where a Miskeen, Yateem, and Aseera came to his door at the time of iftar on the three different days and he gave his food to them.  I remembered that this was mentioned as Sabab un Nuzool (I may be mistaken), but was listed as Ghareeb (regards to the narration).

However, one of the students father began to question one of the scholars who related this story recently and stated he did his research and found that:

The story is fabricated in accordance to Ibn jawzi in is MadooA’aat
That At-Thahabi, Al-Jawraqaani, and even Ibn Taymiyyah say that it is farbricated and call it a lie.

Before I speak with the brother who is upset with the scholar that mentioned this story, I wanted to get your advise as to how I should approach this situation along with any backing to its authenticity or not.  Any help on this matter would be helpful.  Unfortunately, we are seeing a huge push from some of the youth who are constantly challenging the Ulemah with out much knowledge especially in the areas of Fiqh and sometimes even Aqeedah.  I have stayed quiet with regards to the situation but it is becoming difficult to do so when the Ulemah and the Salaf (Rahamatullah) are constantly being attacked and their teachings discounted.  I am eagerly looking forward to your response and Naseeha with regards to the above matter and ongoing situation.

Answer

In the name of Allāh, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Assalāmu ῾alaykum wa Rahmatullāhi Wabarakātuh

The story in question is classified as fabricated and is documented in many books of ‘Maudu’āt’ (compilations of fabricated ahādīth). Hereunder, are the wordings of the story:

7. Lisānul Mizān (vol. 6, pg. 369, Maktab Al-Matbu’āt al-Islāmiyya)

8. Tafsīr Al-Qurtubi (Surāh Al-Insān)[3]

The Scholar that has quoted this story should be advised with diplomacy and utmost respect, that this is a fabricated story. In all probability, the Scholar was unaware of its fabrication.

There is no reason for the brother to be upset with the Scholar. Everyone is bound to err at some point in life, as Allāh Ta’āla states in the Qur’ān that man is created with weakness. Even Sahaba (Radiyallāhu anhum), those blessed with the companionship of Rasulullāh (sallallāhu ‘alayhi wa sallam) had erred. There is a famous Arabic saying:

“Every fast horse is bound to slip”

Hence, the brother should be level headed and not angered or upset with the mistake of the Scholar. He would have rather adopted diplomacy and shared his understanding of the story with the Scholar and sought his input or verification. Rasulullāh (sallallāhu ‘alayhi wa sallam) has stated that there are three groups of people whom all respect except the Munafiqūn (hypocrites): a person that has aged in course of Islām, a person of knowledge (Scholar), and a just ruler. (Al-Targhīb, vol. 1, pg. 115, Al-Fikr).

As pointed out by yourself, people without in-depth Islāmic knowledge are beginning to challenge the Ulamā in matters of Dīn. This is rather but an unfortunate state of affair.    The ‘Ulamā are custodians of Dīn and are much well-versed in its intricacies and minutiae’s, as compared to the masses. Their views in matters of Dīn deserve to be respected and not challenged. It is imprudent and in fact an act of foolishness for laymen to challenge Scholars in matters of Dīn, such as fiqh, ‘aqīdah etc. No person challenges a doctor in matters relating to medicine. So why should Scholars be challenged in matters that pertain to Dīn?

Unfortunately, the bravery of interpreting Qurān, Hadīth and challenging the views of the Scholars has become the occupation of many a people. Shaykh Muhammad Awwāmah (hafidhahullāh) has stated such people are on misguidance, as they attempt to interpret the words of Allāh Ta’āla and Rasulullāh (sallallāhu alayhi wa sallam) without true knowledge. (Atharul Hadīth, pg 62, Dār al-Yusr)

Imām Layth Bin Sa’d used to say:

“Hadīth is misguidance for all except the Scholars” (ibid)

Imām Layth Bin Sa’d intended by his statement, that Hadīth, though being the statements of Rasulullāh (sallallāhu alayhi wa sallam), may deviate a person who attempts to understand it without acquiring the correct knowledge.

We need to educate our communities of the harms of challenging the scholars and interpreting Dīn without proper knowledge. Communities should be advised to approach Scholars in matters of Dīn, trust their verdicts and advices and not rely on their own knowledge.

Finally, people that challenge Scholars based on hearsay information should be warned of the following Hadīth:

“It is sufficient for a person to be classified a liar that he relates everything he hears” (Muslim)

And Allāh Ta῾āla Knows Best
