For a muslim woman what are the minimum parts of the body that are needed to be covered or what are the maximum parts of the body that are permitted to be exposed for the follwing cases

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

My question is about the clothing of muslim woman according to Shariah. For a muslim woman what are the minimum parts of the body that are needed to be covered or what are the maximum parts of the body that are permitted to be exposed for the cases –
a. when she is alone
b. in font of her husband
c. in front of non-mahram males
d. in front of mahram males
e. in front of muslim female
f.  in front of no-muslim female
g. in front of non-muslim male
Please give the answer in detail because i’ve few confusions regarding this issue. For example in one place i found that the minimum part that a muslim woman have to cover in front of a muslum woman is “from knee up to the navel” and is confusing me because to me it allows to expose the parts above navel for this case. like this i’ve few more confusions which are needed to be cleared.

Answer

In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Assalaamu `alaykum waRahmatullahi Wabarakatuh

At the outset, one should understand the importance of modesty.

Iman consist of sixty odd branches. And modesty is a very important branch of Iman.”

Bukhari 1/6 Muslim 1/47

Once Nabi صلى الله عليه و سلم was asked about the awrah, what should be covered and what can be left open? Nabi صلى الله عليه و سلم replied: Do not expose you awrah except from your spouse and slave. Nabi صلى الله عليه و سلم was further asked: what if some people are in the presence of others? Nabi صلى الله عليه و سلم replied: if you are able that nobody sees your awrah then do not let anybody see it. The narrator says I further asked what if one is alone? Nabi صلى الله عليه و سلم replied: Allah is more deserving than other people that one shy away from Him. Abu Dawood 2/201 Ibn Maja 138

It is clear from the above narration that even if a person is alone, he/she should not leave the boundary of modesty.

a.& b.  Though it is permissible to expose the entire body, one should also consider the above narrations.

c. & g. A woman will have to follow the laws of hijab in front of non-mahram males. Allah Ta’ala says in the Holy Quraan:

ذلك أدنى أن يعرفن فلا يؤذين وكان الله غفورا رحيما (59) }

O prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers that they should draw down their shawls over them. That will make it more likely that they are recognized, hence not teased. And Allah is Most-Forgiving, Very-Merciful. [33:59]

In the narration of Bukhari it is mentioned that Hind رضى الله عنها used be so precautious in making hijab that she use to keep long sleeve and buttons in between her fingers.

d. e. & f.  A woman is permitted to expose her body besides the area which is between her chest and knees in front of mahram males. However modesty dictates that that area also be concealed.

And Allah knows best
