I have come upon a hadith in a book on the topic of divorce. However the book did not state its source foro the hadith…

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

I have come upon a hadith in a book on the topic of divorce. However the book did not state its source foro the hadith. So i did a search in the major books of Hadith, namely, Bukhari, Muslim, Malik’s Mutawwa, and Sunan Adu Da’ud and found that the hadith is source from Number 2189 of Book 12 (the Book of Divorce [Kitab Al-Talaq]) from the collection of Sunan Abu Da’ud:

The translation of the hadith reads as follows:

Book 12, Number 2189:
Narrated Abu Hurayrah:

The Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) said: There are three things which, whether undertaken seriously or in jest, are treated as serious: Marriage, divorce and taking back a wife (after a divorce which is not final)

In my readings concerning hadith authenticity I have learnt that not all of the Hadith in Sunan Abu Da’ud are Sahih (Authentically Sound).

Therefore, I am writing to askimam.org to learn more about this hadith. In particular I want to know whether the hadith is Sahih, Hasan or Da’if.

Assalaamu `alaykum waRahmatullahi Wabarakatoh

The Hadith has been recorded in numerous books of Ahadith. Imam Haakim (Rahimahullah) has classified this Hadith as authentic in his Mustadrak.

And Allah knows best
