Breaking an oath intentionally.

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

Assalamu Alaykum, I have two questions.

1. In my past, I remember two times when i have said Wallahi but then broke it intentionally. One time my mum made me say wallahi if I haven’t done a certain sin, and I said wallahi even though I had done it because I didn’t want her to get mad at me. I know this sin is so major and my imaan was very weak at the time. what do I do? Can I be forgiven for this?

2. I read something saying 70000 people will enter jannah without the suffering of the day of judgement. And to be part of these people, you must meet 4 conditions. One of them is ruqyah. In the past i may have asked someone for ruqyah. Also another one is bad omens. It is likely that one time, i may have had bad omens and said something is unlucky (e.g place, number). Does this mean I can never be part of the 70000 because I broke the condition or can I ask for repentance and become a part of it again?

JazakhAllah

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

The name of Allah Ta’ālā deserves the greatest amount of respect. It is unethical for a muslim to use the name of Allah in a false oath. That is disrespectful to the name of Allah. To take a false oath in the name of Allah for something of the past is the major sin.

Consider the following Hadith,

“Major sins are shirk, disobedience to parents, murder and the ‘ghamoos’ oath. (Bukhari) 1

A ghamoos oath refers to a false oath of the past. You should make sincere tawbah and never take a false oath in future. Also give out some sadaqah as compensation for this major sin.2
