Is my fast broken or not?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

i just wanted to know if  i need to give kuffar for the following scenario below?

my situation: i suffer from severe doubts on purity and other stuff. In ramadhan, i always felt i needed to have a ghusl bath because i felt napaak for many reasons. so i used to have quite a few ghusl baths (for most days). However, when i used to gargle, i used to worry that if the water does not reach my throat my ghusl would not be countied and then my salaat would not also be counted. i knew i was fasting and therefore i would avoid the water trying to reach my throat. sometimes that water would accidently go down and then i would think ‘whats the point, i might as well gargle properly’and let the water reach my throat. and then regret it. and try to spit it back out. This case happened to my twice or thrice in ramadhan. Cannot remember. i think it was twice or maybe even once.

I cant remember if i purposely let the water go down my throat or not. ( i think i most likely let it go down my throat) or don’t know  if i’m just doing shuck (doubting) now. However, i never knew at the time, that you have to give kuffara for soemthing  you did intentionally.

i just want to know if this situation requires kuffara? if so what are the rules for kuffara?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

In principle, if you are certain that water seeped through your throat then you will have to compensate the fast. However no Kaffarah is obligatory.1

It is clear from your actions that you are suffering from OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder)

We advise you consult a professional to get treated for the sickness and make dua to Allah Taala to cure you from the sickness.

Furthermore, if you are to have negative thoughts recite

لاحول ولا قوة الا بالله

Thereafter, do not entertain such thoughts. They are baseless and from Shaytaan.

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
