Performing Umrah before Hajj

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Albalagh.net

Performing Umrah before Hajj

By Mufti Ebrahim Desai

Q.) Is there any problem in performing Umrah before Hajj? Or is it better to keep money so Hajj and Umrah may be performed at the same time?

A.) To perform Umrah once in a lifetime is Sunnat-e-Muakkadah and to perform Hajj is Fardh.

When one has the money and means to perform Hajj, it has to be done immediately in that same year; delaying it will be a sin. Whereas Umrah can be performed at anytime or not at all. If you have the money for Umrah, not Hajj, then it will be permissible to go for Umrah. However, it will be better to save and go for your Fardh Hajj and do Umrah together with it.
