Relationships With a Friend Selling Alcohol

By Mufti Muhammad Kadwa

Q.) One of my good Muslim friends has opened a convenience store and he also sells alcohol at his store. My question is what should be my future relations with him. Should I break up with him? Can I visit him? Can I eat at his home? [Arif Muhammad]

A.) 1. It is haram to sell alcohol and income derived from alcohol sales is also haram. If you are confident that your favorable relationship with him will persuade him to relinquish such activity, continue maintaining this relationship whilst advising him about the evils of this prohibition. You may even visit him at home.

2. On the basis of what you say, the bulk of his income is halal. It is permissible to eat at his home but not advisable to do so. And Allah Ta’ala Knows Best
