Taharat: Dealing with Doubts

By Mufti Ebrahim Desai

Q.) I have a problem sometimes that after using the bathroom and making wudhu, sometimes I get a feeling that one or two drops of urine has come out. Mostly it happens when I am making Salat and this is always without my control. Sometimes I have a feeling that I have passed air and in both these cases I am not sure if that is the case. So in such cases what should one do? Jazakallah Khair. [Riaz]

A.) In most cases, these are whispers from Shaytaan. Shaytaan work in different ways to take a person’s attention away from Ibaadat.

After urinating, you should ensure that all the drops are finished. One method of doing this, is to stand up straight, then sit down again. Then use three or five tissue papers (an odd number) to completely dry yourself of all urine drops. Coughing and shaking will also help in ensuring that the drops are finished. After that wash with water.

Thereafter, after performing Wudhu, Nabi Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam mentioned that one should splash water over his pants at the private part area. This will help to remove those doubts.

Also note, when you are not sure whether you are pure and impure from the drops of urine, the rule is that you are pure (paak). This is due to the principle (Aqeedah) of Imaam (RA) that, ‘leave the doubt and work on Yaqeen’, ‘And Yaqeen is not removed by Shakk (doubt).’ (Ashbah Wan nazaair pg.120). And Allah Ta’ala Knows Best
