Spending Zakat on Own Charity

By Mufti Ebrahim Desai

Q.) My husband wants to open an Islamic institute in Dubai for poor and needy children so they can learn Qur’an. Can he use his own Zakat on his own institute? Please advise.

A.) Your husband’s intention to open an educational institute is an act of great virtue. May Allah accept his efforts and make the institute a success, Aameen.

It is not permissible to use Zakaat money directly for the building of the institute. It may be used to give to the poor and needy students to fulfill their needs. That includes their fees for the institute.
